Airports on Crete during Summer Time

There are 2 main arports on Crete at the moment. Heraklion at the Eastern part of the island and Chania towards the North West. Chania airport is about 25 minutes drive to the Hotel and Heraklion is about 1hour and 15 minutes drive away. Between April and October there are direct flights to Crete from Copenhagen, Amsterdam and Paris with Transavia (tickets seen from EUR 200) however Air Berlin and other low cost airlines do also have cheap flights tickets from major cities in Europe.

During the winter season, you will have to fly to Athens and then change flight. SAS, British Airways, Lufthansa and other major airlines usually have a daily service. You need to book a conneting flight from Athens to Chania at either Olympic Airways or Agerian. In the low season this can cost from EUR 50 and up depending on how early you book.

Naturally, the trip are faster when flying, but if you have time enough and enjoy sailing try a ferry from Athens to Chania/Rethymnon, it may be a cheaper way to get to the island. The overnight ferry takes approx. 8 hours to Souda/Chania and the speedy ferry lasts about 4,5 hours to Rethymnon.

If you can, it's easier to fly into Chania instead of Heraklion as it will save you money on taxi fares. However, weigh up the possible saving of flying to Heraklion as you can often get cheaper flights to this destination as it is operated by several airlines.
